About Us

Nagi Bird Sanctuary is a 200 hectare wetland in Jamui district of Bihar. The wetland which formed as a result of construction of the Nagi dam, is a prime location for migrating birds in the winter season from October to April. It was declared a bird sanctuary in 1984. It has also been designated as Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International.

The migratory birds like the Bar-headed Goose, Greylag Goose, Northern Pintail, Red-crested Pochard, Steppe Eagle, Taiga Flycatcher, etc. flock to the sanctuary after travelling from the Himalayas, Europe, North Asia and even from the Arctic Circle. Apart from the migratory birds, a wide variety of resident birds like the Ashy-crowned Sparrow Lark, also inhabit the sanctuary and its surroundings throughout the year.

The sanctuary is connected by road from Patna (200 km), Deoghar in Jharkhand (80 km), Ranchi (280 km) and Kolkata (420 km). It is just 10 km from the well-connected Jhajha Railway Station. Although it lies in the Gangetic Plains of India, the sanctuary has a landscape reminiscent of the Deccan Plateau. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to April. There is also a pleasant surprise waiting for birders and travellers in Nakti Bird Sanctuary which is also an IBA and lies 5 km away from Nagi Bird Sanctuary. Like Nagi, it is one of the least explored and obscure bird sanctuaries in India and there are a host of birds, butterflies and dragonflies waiting to delight you.
