Significance
About 3% of the global population of Bar-headed geese are found at Nagi Bird Sanctuary. This was the main reason for being designated as an Important Bird Area. Beyond the cultivated areas, the water body is surrounded by barren, rocky terrain. Consequently, dryland birds like the Indian Courser, Indian Sandgrouse, Yellow-wattled Lapwing and Indian Robin are also spotted here.
Thousands of water birds congregate in and around Nagi Bird Sanctuary in winter. The Sanctuary offers a clear view of birds to photographers and tourists amidst a vibrant background. Irrigation and ground water recharge are also key ecosystem services provided by the wetland.
The Forest Department has taken many steps to enrich the habitat of birds by afforestation with ficus species, creating islands in the middle of the wetland, erecting perches for birds, making walking trails and installing ecohuts, benches and watch towers for the benefit of tourists.
